Sunnegga Funicular
Built in 1985 the Sunnegga Express was pioneering in that it travelled entirely through a tunnel built into the mountain. The 3 minute journey whisks you 689 metres vertically to the top station at 2288 metres.
From the funicular, a new combination lift has been constructed that will transport skiers straight up to the Bauherd interchange. The ‘combi’, as its name suggests, is a combination of six-seater chairlifts and eight-seater gondolas, and was built in 2005.
After negotiating the interchange, there is a cable car that can fit 150 passengers, built in 1996, to take you up to the Rothorn, and at the other extreme, a four-seater gondola built in 1971, to take you all the way back to the valley floor. From there, a connecting cable car will transport you up to the Gornergrat skiing slopes.
In the immediate Rothorn area of the slopes, a three-seater chairlift serves both sides of the Rothorn slopes.
A four-seater lift built in 1989 serves skiers below the Sunnegga area and takes them directly to Blauherd. For the Gornergrat area of the slopes, there’s a four-seater lift to replace the older one built in 1956.
