Most people arrive in Zermatt to stay in their Zermatt accommodation by train, but have you tried arriving, not just by train, but by The Glacier Express? This beautiful journey from either St Moritz or Davos, up and down valleys, over bridges and through tunnels is a beautiful way to start your Zermatt experience at your Zermatt accommodation.
In the 1920's Switzerland became very popular with the rich classes of Europe and became the destination for chic resorts such as St Moritz and Zermatt. In Zermatt you can see the impressive Zermatt accommodation that was built in that period, such as the Mont Cervin Palace and the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Initially promoted as places to regain your health, rest and recuperate in the mountain air in summer, their popularity steadily grew as a winter destination for skiing and other mountain exploits. Staying in Zermatt accommodation allows you to also enjoy these delights today.
To take advantage of this tourist boom the three private train companies of the time joined forces to create a route between these two very exclusive resorts to create the The Glacier Express route, making it's first journey in 1926. Over the following decades numbers grew from 20,000 to over 90,000. The journey could only be made in summer as part of the route was impassable in winter, however with the opening of the Furka tunnel as recently as 1982 the service became a year round possibility.
The route is made up of four sections each with its tunnels and bridges.
-
The Albula line starts from St Moritz, travelling through the Albula Tunnel, then through many spirals as it must drop such a height in such a short distance before passing through Filisur where the train continues on to the Landwasser Viaduct to Chur.
-
The Oberalp section starts along the Rhine, and climbs to the highest point in the whole journey, the Oberalp Pass at over a heady 2,000 metres. The line then drops as it continues to Andermatt.
-
The Furka line takes the train from Andermatt to the Furka Tunnel which is 15 km long, connecting the Canton of Uri, to the Canton of Valais. The line then flows the Rhone to Brig, familiar with any visitor to Zermatt as the change stop from Geneva.
-
The Matteral line take the train from Brig to Visp, passing Stalden, St Niklaus and past Randa, where a landslide has left a huge amounts of rock scattered over the area, cutting of the valley in 1991. Then after Tasch you shortly reach the beautiful town of Zermatt.
The train itself is made up of carriages of first and second glass but all with big panoramic windows that allow you to see the stunning scenery that Switzerland is renowned for. If you enjoy the views, then continue the pleasure by choosing Zermatt accommodation with Matterhorn views.
The journey is approximately 8 hours and starts in the morning arriving in the early evening. To keep you nourished the on onboard kitchen prepares fresh meals that are served to you at your seat. Our Zermatt accommodation also has fully equipped kitchens where you can prepare your own healthy hearty meals.
The cost of the journey varies depending on the time of year, the time of day you choose, (from normally 4 trains in the morning) and of course the class of car you choose, but ranges from around 100 to 250 Swiss Francs. You can keep the cost of your Zermatt accommodation low, as we have some great budget Zermatt accommodation such as the Esplanade building or the Alouette Building.
